June 26, 2017 – Dogs Are An Entrepreneurs Best Friend

After a great experience of their own at a Camp in Dallas, Amy and Brian Walters decided to open a Camp Bow Wow in Tulsa in 2008, the largest pet care service provider in the U.S. and the only pet care franchise in the Tulsa area. The Camp was so successful, they opened a second location four years later in Bixby. When your clients are drooling, four-legged creatures with names like Balto, Rocco, or Zeus, everything revolves around the dogs. Dogs have a choice of a climate-controlled indoor area or outdoor play yards, each with play structures. They employ around 20 Camp Counselors, who are all extensively trained in dog behavior, pet first aid and CPR, and engage with the dogs throughout the day.

Nearly half of American households have dogs and that number is growing, according to the American Pet Products Association (APPA). Pet owners have the peace of mind knowing their dogs are being loved, whether they are there for day care or a 5-day vacation. The Camp is monitored 24/7, and live webcams allow pet owners to check on their dog from anywhere using a computer or mobile device. Camp Bow Wow Messenger will soon be available, allowing even more personal interaction with your dog. Overnight Campers get to relax in the evening on a cozy cot in their individual cabins, and luxury suites are also available with live webcams in each room.

Camp Bow Wow greets dogs big and small from a Dachshund to a Great Dane. Upon arrival, they are separated by size and temperament. The Camp offers dog day care and overnight boarding and each Camper is required to pass a socialization interview, be spayed or neutered, and be current on vaccinations. The Tulsa Camp can board up to 85 and have 115 Campers for day care while Bixby can board 80 and have 95 daily, with plenty of room to grow.

Camp Bow Wow is devoted to their doggy clients, but they also give back to the community supporting organizations like the Oklahoma Boxer Rescue. They foster boxers, taking great care of them until they get adopted. The Bow Wow Buddies Foundation also provides urgent medical care funds to dogs who are either homeless or whose parents cannot afford to pay their veterinary bills.

Camp Bow Wow utilized the SBA 504 loan program. Brian’s advice for future entrepreneurs: Be sure you have enough working capital while you build your business.
